Fiers vs. Eovaldi

Eovaldi (0-0)                             Fiers(0-0)

Nathan Eovaldi - Los Angeles Dodgers                             Michael Fiers - Milwaukee Brewers

Both of these pitchers have just been called up from their respective Double AA teams.  It will be interesting to see if it will be a high scoring game due to the lack of experience.  Note: Stats are not provided due to lack of pitching this year in the Major leagues.

Morning Jargon

Back from a great weekend so here is what is up.

Marcum pitched a great game last night.  He had nine strikeouts and only one earned run.  He was able to go 119 pitches which in turn allowed the bullpen for Milwakee much needed rest.

A look at Marcums great outings that he has add and where this ranks.

Bad news for the Brewers.  Lucroy is going on the 15 day DL and is expected to miss four to six weeks.

Fiers is going to make the start for the Brewers today.  It will be his first major league start.

Gallardo vs Kennedy

Yovani Gallardo - Milwaukee Brewers                                                  Ian Kennedy - Arizona Diamondbacks

Gallardo                                                           Kennedy

W-L:           2-4                                                                     3-4

IP                50.2                                                                   56.1

H                 49                                                                      62

ER               26                                                                      26

HR               5                                                                        7

K                  48                                                                     45

ERA             4.62                                                                 4.72

As you can see both of their numbers are fairly similar.  Last year they were both their respective club’s aces, and both have had struggles so far this year.  Gallardo has not given up as many hits as Kennedy but both have roughly the same earned runs.  One thing to be mindful is that a lot of Gallardo’s earned runs came against the cardinals otherwise he has been pretty solid.

Shortstop Upgrade?

The Brewers have been searching for answers on offense.   The  lineups have been shuffled, players moved to different positions.  The shortstop position puts the Brewers in a difficult position though.  Throughout MLB there is little talent at shortstop.  Cody Ransom was just picked up on waivers by the Brewers to help alleviate thisCody Ransom Cody Ransom #1 of the Arizona Diamondbacks hits a two run home run against the Los Angeles Dodgers during the seventh inning of the Major League Baseball game at Chase Field on August 7, 2011 in Phoenix, Arizona. concern.  The question is will he be able to provide a spark to the line up.  Izturis has been good on defense but very subpar on offense.  Currently he is batting just .200 with only 4 RBIs and a homerun.  Ransom on the other hand is batting with a .269 average with 13 RBIs and four homeruns.  If Ransom could continue even close to this pace this would be an improvement over Izturis.  However this appears to be an above average season.    Ransom’s career  batting percentage is .226 with .310 OBP and .409 SLG.    Both his OBP and SLG percentages are higher than Izturis’s career percentage.   Izturis’s OBP stands at .294 and the slugging percentage stands at .321.   Izturis has been pretty horrendous on offense and Ransom could get some offense going.  Ransom may not provide a drastic amount but any offense right now helps.

If Ransom would provide poor defense this would cancel out whatever benifits he brought with his bat.  Plus one of the reasons that the Brewers like Izturis is his defense.  Izturis through 1200 games has had only 95 errors. We do not want a guy especially at shortstop to commit a bunch of errors.  If we compare this with Ransom, who in 121 games has had 21 errors.  If he had the same amount of games in as Izturis did, his pace for errors would hover around 120 errors.  This is about 25 more errors than Izturis.  Ransom has been able to hold his own on defense.

Ransom would not be a drastic drop off on defense compared to Izturis.  Ransom has had a good year so far and has better on base percentages and slugging percentages than Izturis.  If Ransom could continue close to his pace this year he would be an offensive upgrade over Izturis.  Brewer fans should not expect Ransom to provide a gigantic spark but he may be able to provide a little spark and depth which may help the Brewers win a couple more games.

What’s Up with the Brew Crew

Today the Brewers will play at Arizona.  Many fond memories from last years playoff.  However both clubs are not looking like playoff teams.  Fox sports has a good preview on the match up.   Speaking of playoffs the Brewers will likely have to reach somewhere around 90 wins according to Kartje in which they would have to be on 72-46 record, more on it after this jump.

Cody Ransom will be facing his old team, however it is not apparent the amount of playing time that he will receive.  Ransom was batting .269 with four home runs and 13 RBIs so far this season.  If he could continue on this path it would cover up Izturis who is only batting .200 with one home run and 4 RBIs.  Hopefully though Ransom plays good defense though.  More on Ransom and Izturis later.

Brewers also made some moves by recalling Mclendon and placing Estrada on DL.  It is expected that he will miss three to four starts.  Currently the plan is for Parra to fill in those starts.  Expect more heavy use of the bullpen.  Brew Crew Ball has a good piece on how the bullpen has been overworked.

A good piece on the NLDS series rematch worth a read.

The Reds are rolling right now.  Which makes it more difficult for the Brewers to catch them.  Shoenfield of ESPN has a good article on how the Red’s are getting production from everywhere.
